Rocky
Rocky is 36 years old and comes from Poland. He moved to the UK thirteen years ago and lives in Bristol and is currently working as a Support Worker for St Monica Trust. Rocky has been encouraged by his employer to study for a Nursing apprenticeship. However, in order to enrol on this course he needs qualifications in Maths and English.
“Because I work irregular hours I couldn’t find a course provider in Bristol that suited my free time. I came across GL11 when googling for local courses. I’ve been coming here for three months now as a student on the level 2 Maths and level 1 English courses. GL11 is really welcoming and friendly. Lesley, my Tutor, is very helpful and she enables learners to progress at their own pace.”
The English and Maths courses are delivered in partnership with South Gloucestershire and Stroud College.
Sarah Kopera, Business Development Manager at SGS College, comments “We have been working with GL11 for a number of years providing a range of skill-based courses such as IT courses, functional skills, ESOL, and wellbeing courses including seated yoga, mindfulness and expressive writing. We also deliver activities for adults with learning disabilities such as Adventurers and The Gateway Award. These courses, as well as offering new skills, also support social inclusion and offer life enhancing and in this case life changing opportunities. Our bespoke programme of courses meets the specific needs of the community whilst ensuring consistent and quality assured provision.”
“In a very short space of time” adds Rocky “my Maths and English skills have increased tenfold. My confidence has grown, and I am looking forward to gaining my qualifications so that I can then move on to the next chapter in my life and start studying for my apprenticeship course.”
Listening Fortnight
Each year in the month of November, during our Listening Fortnight, we ask our service users to complete a questionnaire, to help us understand who our users are, what they engage in, how the Hub has supported them and what else they would like us to provide.
Our most recent Listening Fortnight analysis tells us that 81.8% of service users have seen either some change or a big change in themselves with regards to learning a new skill.
